About English Language and General Linguistics Department
A far-sighted Department of English Language and Literature was first established in 1997E.C/ 2005 G.C with the aim of teaching English Language & Literature as a foreign language by very few English Language instructors and one section of undergraduate students.The priority area of the department lies in the intellectual advancement of its students and in their preparation for careers, as well as research, community services and technology transfer. Following its missions, the department envisions producing a high quality graduates who can put hand in solving the ever increasing English language problems by integrating theory and practice in the field. Presently, the department is a huge education segment among seven departments of the College of Social sciences and Humanities with two undergraduate (English Language and Literature beginning from 2005 and General Linguistics since 2017). In addition, a PhD in ELT (launched in 2018), and an MA in TEFL since 2011 in its regular programs are being run. The department also has CEP extension in MA in. A trace conducted in 2013 shows that there has no unemployed graduates of the department, as the graduates of the department have got a diversified employment
opportunities.
Although the department was actively engaging itself previously in research, community service and technology transfer activities by mobilizing its academic staff members, as part of its mission, it has been recently recognized that the department, along with the CSSH, has low performance in research, community services and community. The staff members need effective support and trainings in these cases. Concerning publication, the academic staff members of department have been conducting problem-solving articles from the previously completed studies. They have published and disseminated many research results in different means to help the community access the information. The department activity participated in the first social science annual research conference undertaken in 2018 with collaboration of CBE, IEBS and SL. To sum up, the department believes that education is the means of communicating attitudes, knowledge and skills, fostering critical thinking through language.
