Physics department was established in 2006 when the Ambo College expanded its programs with a vision of becoming independent University. Initially, it was organized under the faculty of education with a primary of objective of producing high school physics teachers. But latter, it became one department in the faculty of Natural and Computational Sciences which emerged in to College of Natural and Computational Sciences in 2010. Since its establishment, the department has been running both regular and summer (formerly B.Ed and B.Sc) programs leading to bachelor degree in physics. Additionaly, undergraduate program in Physics Laboratory Science and an M.Sc summer program were opened. Currently, undergraduate program in Physics Laboratory Science has been modified as undergraduate program in Physics Laboratory Technology (PhLT) and M.Sc Regular programs have been opened. The PhLT, is new in its kind in the country and aimed at training manpower that can carry out physics laboratory at university, college and school levels.
The average annual temperature (18.5 ͦ C), optimum rain fall, conducive climate together with its proximity to the Capital, Finfinne, makes Ambo an ideal town to live in where one can enjoy studying M.Sc program in physics at the Department of Physics, Ambo University. Ambo town is unique in that it is transversally crossed by Huluka River from south-east to north-west which adds another beauty to the town. Besides, it is home to a natural hot spring and bottled natural mineral water known as Ambo Mineral Water.
