Department of Anesthesia

  • Anesthesia program was started in January 2016 GC under the nurse department by admitting 15 post-basic BSc students, from Oromia regional health Bureau.  The department of anesthesia was established one year later, January 2017, with four human powers. Since then, four batches of post-basic BSc anesthesia students (a total of 60 students) were graduated.

  • Currently the department is running only generic anesthesia students.Anesthesia was one of the least addressed disciplines in the history of medical practice in Ethiopia.In line with the training philosophy of the University, anesthesia department is providing regular clinical services at Ambo University referral hospital with the philosophy of integrated teaching and clinical services for quality anesthesia health care services.Approximately > 10,000 patients in a month are coming to the hospital from the catchment population of about 3.5 million people. Of which about > 200 patient underwent surgery under anesthesia as elective and or emergency.

  • Beside to this; the departments actively engaged in Community Based Education (CBE), teaching in the adequate practical exposure in health institutions and community settings with the following mission and vision goals. The mission of our department is to unite qualified human power in the department, provide safe anesthesia care, undertake research-based problem-solving community service, and ensure a quality of education and produce competent, confident, ethically respectful and compassionate anesthesia professionals. By 2025 EC, in line with the vision of Ambo University, the department of anesthesia envisions to become among the top 10 programs in the horn of African universities for anesthesia training, perioperative care providers, and innovative research and community services.
